Council installs deafness friendly telephones

4/07/2008 1:26:00 PM
Being hard of hearing no longer has to be a problem when doing business at the Port Augusta Civic Centre.

Along with the recent renovations of the customer service section, the council has installed deafness-friendly phones.

The customer service assistant can speak into a microphone, which directs the sound into the phone, which can also be set to use with a hearing aid.

Council customer service supervisor Marlene Foote said the phones could also be used if customers had a confidential issue they did not want to talk about loudly.

"It's more confidential and friendly," she said.

The renovations also included a lower desk that allowed wheelchair access to the counter, and meeting rooms if required.
