Demolition began on the Exchange Hotel on Friday, as stage one of the process.

The second stage, which is scheduled for October, will take down the café area and bottle shop, and stage three in December will demolish the Great Northern Hotel.

Eureka Group operations manager Courtney Inge said the new hotels would start being built as the demolition continued.

They will continue to trade as the construction continues.
