Hospitality workers in the region are set for a boost in support from the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union.
The union toured the region last week promoting its new Top Shelf collective agreement to hotel workers.
Previously hotel workers in South Australia had guaranteed wages and conditions under the Hotels and Clubs Award although the Howard Government's Industrial Relations changes meant the award was under threat, union organiser Kelly Edwards said.
This was the first tour of the Spencer Gulf region the union had done in some time, Ms Edwards said.
"We noticed that a lot of hospitality workers in this region weren't aware of the changes and were glad for our help," she said.
"This region is somewhere the union will be looking into in the future for sure."
The Top Shelf agreement delivers certainty and sustainability in working conditions until 2011 and protects hospitality workers existing employment conditions.
The union is the second largest in the State and is now looking at increasing membership in Port Augusta and surrounding regions, Ms Edwards said.
Ms Edwards had so far been successful in negotiations with the Eureka Group who will sign the agreement to protect their workers and is working on expanding the agreement to the other hotels and pubs in Port Augusta.
"We're (the union) looking at getting better conditions for our members not only in Adelaide but also in country areas," Ms Edwards said.
