Victims benefit from branch’s move

9/07/2008 1:04:00 PM
Victims of crime in Port Augusta will benefit from a move of the Victim Support Service.

The local branch last month moved to its new office at the Port Augusta Courts from sharing with UnitingCare Wesley on Chapel Street.

UnitingCare Wesley was funded to provide the service for Port Augusta.

Service regional services and strategic development manager Jodie Sloan said the move was based on a model used at Mount Gambier, where the service was also located at the court house.

"We're more visible and it's a way of strengthening relationships," Jodie said.

"It's really important for us to have good working relationships with (services like) police, magistrates and prosecution."

The service provides support for victims of crime, including information, advocacy and referrals to counselling services.

Jodie said that in regional South Australia, 95 per cent of referrals to the service came from police, and regional offices saw about 600 new clients every year.

"Victims of crime need a lot of support … and so the service is there to support them and to understand," she said.

The service is not just for victims who have reported crimes to police or who have been through the court system.

Acting Port Augusta regional coordinator Kate Fiay said the service could also help victims with reporting their crimes.

"Police stations are frightening … some victims are scared to go to the station," she said.

Jodie said it was important for the service to be more visible in the community so it could help more victims.

"Victims have rights … they don't get a lot of say in court," she said.

"It's about people having support in the process.

"Country people have a right to the same information and support as city people."

Kate said she was hoping to see the service become more involved in the Port Augusta community.

"We want to involve the community," she said.

The service is partly-funded by the Attorney-General's Department.
