Power failure against Crows

9/07/2008 12:40:00 PM
Port Augusta Table Tennis goes into the mid season break with all senior teams still in contention for a finals berth.

Magic FM Crows 11 rubbers 35 sets defeated McDonalds Power 6 rubbers 23 sets.

The Crows were lucky to pick up Richard Frensham for this round and he duly won all his matches with Wes Yates pushing him for two sets.

Mark Shirley fresh from running the Pichi Richi Marathon the previous day had an easy win over Peter Trewartha but then was out of stamina to go down to Richard and Max Duhring.

Alby Kroes went down in four close sets to Matt Prentis and Cody Moore worked hard but Todd Phillips beat him in four sets.

Sportscene Hawks 13 rubbers 47 sets defeated South Bulldogs 8 rubbers 31 sets.

The Hawks won their second consecutive match to climb into the top four and starting to show the form that got them to last year's grand final.

Stewart Vincent won all his matches for the Hawks without dropping a set in singles whilst young Craig Shirley won all his singles easily.

There were five classical five set wins on the night with Sue Simms beating Vicki Bemmerl 11-9 in the last and Sue later losing to Valerie Moore 11-6 in the last set.

Brenton Osborne put away Karl Chamberlain 11-7 in the fifth set and Bruce Molineux had a big win over Alistair Miller 11-8 in the fifth set.

Peter "Frog" Keneally caused Vicki more pain by winning in five entertaining sets.

John Osborne got a free coaching clinic by playing the top three guns of the Hawks.

Port Augusta Refrigeration Eagles 13 rubbers 41 sets defeated Go Nabs 3 rubbers 14 sets.

It was always going to be a tough task but the late withdrawal of Bruno Carcuro with blisters from the half marathon put his team on the back foot!

Rhys Bavington returned with two easy wins but "Skinny" Edwards had a good win in four sets over Rhys.

Robert Harris had an easy win over Michael Millbank who was traded for the night and "Chooky" Yates also had the pleasure of beating his "team-mate".

Grant Keane was spinning the ball ferociously out of the rough as usual and Kristen Long showed no mercy with both Rowbottom's at his mercy.

Go Nabs showed a bit of grit in the doubles losing two of them in close five set matches.

The junior competition was postponed this week and coach Richard Frensham put them through their paces.

He showed them the importance of warming up properly for around 15 minutes and how practicing their skills correctly will help them become better players.

Competition resumes on Monday, July 21 at South Augusta Football Club and Stewart Vincent will be at the club on the preceding Mondays for practice at around 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
