Railways proves it can beat anyone

Railways v Vikings

Catch us if you can is the message Railways is sending.

I have stated before how good this A grade side is and I got to witness it first hand with Vikings facing up to them on Saturday.

I make no excuses for my side but Railways has proven that it can beat anyone in this competition.

I spoke to Angela McAuliffe a few weeks ago and asked her why she thinks Railways is so good at the moment.

Her response was that her team has been together for some time and know how each other plays plus the hard work they all have put in over the years on their own skill has contributed to the teams success.

Railways has built up a culture of success and this is not just at A grade level but through the senior and junior ranks and at this point is rewarding itself with success.

On Saturday it was clinical with its approach to goal and all Vikings could do was watch which it did as Railways moved the ball from defence to attack and scored that fast that Vikings’ defence was still thinking about what it was supposed to do.

Railways dominated the first quarter 22 to five and won the game right there as it not only gave it a handy lead but broke the spirit of Vikings.

Second quarter was better from Vikings with nine goals to Railways 11 but considering the pace of the game Railways started with it was no surprise they needed a quarter to catch their breath.

So far I have not painted a good picture for Vikings in this game but considering they are second on the ladder it needed to step up to the plate more than it did and the players agree.

Its game on Saturday was below par and now have to regroup and show why they are in second spot at this stage in the comp.

Quorn v Saint Joseph

There is a trend forming in the A grade games with that being that one team jumps out of the blocks and sets up the win in the first quarter and this was the case in this game with Saint Joseph controlling the game and setting up 25 goal scoring opportunities to Quorn's 17 to lead the match 13 to six at the end of the first quarter.

Second quarter was much the same with Saint Joseph having more of the ball and scoring from its opportunities while Quorn's missed shots hurt with possessions gained by Saint Joseph which it quickly turned in to goals.

In the second half it was a different game.

Quorn brought on experienced mid court player Ange Finlay and this seemed to settle her side as it played the game it expected to and put pressure back onto Saint Joseph.

With scores being 32 to 14 at half time Quorn dug deep and gained some pride back which is important for this young side as it is building to become a force in this division.

Second half scores went in favour of Saint Joes but only by two goals with scores being 26 to 24.

Quorn will break this game down and ask what was missing in its first half and take confidence from the fact that it can match it with other A grade sides but it needs to do it for the whole game.

Shamrocks v Magpies

As with the other teams that won this weekend Magpies got off to a great start and set the win up in the first quarter.

Magpies seem to be settling its side down for the second half of the season and holding on to fourth position.

Courtney Bell has made a difference to its side bringing in experience and holding down key positions. ‘

Shamrocks has taken a blow with injuries but as is the case with Quorn, is building for the future.

Its expectations for this year is only known by the team and you wonder if it is asking itself what else does it need to do?

But I can tell you the competition needs both Shamrocks and Quorn in the A grade division.

Shamrocks’ second half was more competitive only going down by four goals so this would suggest that it has the game but just need to bring it from the start.
